FOODBANK VOLUNTEERS:
Help at Tesco’s Foodbank Collection Days
Twice a year we have an opportunity to do a big foodbank collection day, across 3 days, at the two large Tesco’s stores in Spytty and on Cardiff Road. We need a large team of volunteers to chat to customers about the foodbank and encourage them to donate food, sort the donations into crates, and transport it to the foodbank. Can you help for a few hours or a whole day? Perhaps you can come with a group of friends or work colleagues?
Drivers for Foodbank
Our food bank receives donations of food from individuals who place items in the collection boxes in stores. We also get surplus items donated by supermarkets themselves. We need volunteers to drive to the supermarkets, empty the collection boxes and bring the food to the foodbank, where it is weighed, dated and sorted.
We need reasonably fit and strong volunteers, with their own car/van (we are getting our own van soon) to collect food regularly (or occasionally) and help with sorting on arrival.
Volunteers can take on collections at regular times on regular days or choose to be on call for any extra pickups.
Foodbank Stock Control
We always need lots of volunteers to join the team checking, sorting, dating, weighing and packing away all the food donations. This ensures that it is safe to eat and the stock with the shortest dates gets used first.
It’s amazing how much fun can be had with a bit of music and chatter as the job gets done!
Opportunities available on Tuesdays and Fridays.
Foodbank Bag Packers
Each Tuesday and Thursday morning, before foodbank opens, we receive a list of all the clients who have been issued with vouchers. Each client has been asked questions about what they need, any dietary requirements and the number of people in the household. A suitable pick list is provided and volunteers pack the food bags with the relevant items.
Foodbank Lead Volunteers
These volunteers welcome our guests into the foodbank, use the database find their voucher and have a chat about life or how else we can help and signpost to wider support, These volunteers need to be kind, have great people skills and an ability to treat all kinds people, from all walks of life, with dignity and compassion.
Foodbank Welcomers & Tea/Coffee Makers
When people first come to the foodbank, they are often a bit anxious or maybe embarrassed. If you have a warm welcoming personality, can greet with a smile, chat to anyone and offer a cuppa and a biscuit, this is the perfect role for you.

Christmas Day Lunch Volunteers – Usually a few days before Christmas
We hope to be able to provide Christmas lunch to those who are homeless or alone on Christmas Day. We need people to cook (Must complete Level 2 food safety), servers, and people to set up and tidy away afterwards. Can you help make someone’s Christmas special?
Trustee
If you have a passion for doing the sort of work that we are involved in at SPCC and could bring experience such as keeping accounts, managing a business, running a charity, fundraising, doing grant applications, safeguarding, or H&S we would like to hear from you. We are looking for new trustees with a fresh vision to carry things forward into the future, as some long serving ones step down, having served the maximum term.
IT Help
So many folks need a little support to use computers and connect in a world which is increasingly digital. We have computers available and would love to hear from anyone who would like to give 1:1 supervision and help to our guests, as they use the computers to pay bills, carry out tasks related to benefits, write CVs, write a letter, print a document or find information on the internet. Sometimes all people need is a friendly face to sit alongside them as they learn, by doing. We need patient, experienced people, willing to share what they know with others.
Many people cannot afford a computer or have the internet at home. Could you help people use the facilities at Stow Park?
Community Lunch Helpers
Our community lunches are all about building community, overcoming isolation, having fun and a great meal in a warm space. We need more welcomers, cooks, servers, bottle washers, and people to prepare some simple activities afterwards to get people chatting, making friends and having fun. Is this you?
The lunches are at 12.30pm. on Wednesdays.
Toast Tuesdays
We welcome all sorts of people on a Tuesday lunchtime to come make, friends and chat over a simple something on toast lunch. Can you welcome, cook or serve?
DIY
Are you experienced and competent with DIY? Perhaps you are a retired professional with some time on your hands and a desire to do something for the community? We always have jobs, small and not so small, that need doing. Could you help?
Welcome/Receptionist
All sorts of people phone or pop into the centre, with all kinds of needs, queries or just desiring a chat. We would love to have some volunteers who can help with those queries, tell them about the services we offer, put the kettle on and generally give time to show someone cares.
Grant Applications & Fundraising
We always need to raise funds to cover all the activities that we do for the community. If you have experience with applying for grants or fundraising, please get in touch.
